JetBrains IntelliJ IDE Debuts “Run Targets”

JetBrains has released IntelliJ IDEA 2021.1, an update to the company’s flagship IDE that introduces a new way to run applications through the IDE. The new version also improves Kotlin support and adds support for Java 16.

IntelliJ IDEA 2021.1 was released on April 6th and is the first version of the IDE this year. Version highlighting is a new way to run applications within the IDE that allows developers to edit or test an application’s execution configuration to set the target of execution – a Docker container, an SSH server, or a Windows subsystem for Linux ( WSL). in this first version. Previously, apps were run locally with all the settings from the IDE.

For example, the new run configuration option allows developers to run a Spring Boot application with an SSH or Docker target. With Docker selected, developers can drag or create an image. When an image is dragged, code completions help select the correct image.

Also included in IntelliJ Idea 2021.1 is support for Java 16, which was released in March, with the ability, for example, to remodel records in the same Java classes. Existing code can be migrated to use new language capabilities.

Another new feature allows developers to select an inspection profile that provides analysis prior to the commit phase. Also new is a built-in preview for HTML to get an idea of ​​what changes will look like if they are made, and functions for handling JSONPath expressions.

Other new features and improvements in IntelliJ Idea 2021.1:

For the Kotlin language, developers can define illegal package dependencies in the Kotlin code. Defining illegal package dependencies can help prevent code from accidentally depending on the wrong packages; From the database layer, which is based on the user interface layer. This function was available for Java code. Kotlin / JVM developers also get UML diagrams for Kotlin classes. Syntax and error highlighting for Kotlin is also faster, as is code completion. Support for Windows Subsystem for Linux has been improved, with support for Java projects in WSL2 as well as for Maven and Gradle. The profiler has been redesigned to make it easier to use. Ease of use improvements and bug fixes have been made, such as: B. an improved color scheme for UML diagrams in the user interface. The Space Team Collaboration Plug-In and Code with Me Collaborative Development Tool are now included in IntelliJ.
